Inspiration

As a company, we all like to go to as many events as possible in the community to learn about new products, meet new faces, and find new inspiration.  A couple weeks ago we were able to attend an NKBA chapter event where Matthew Quinn was a key note speaker.  As one of the leading experts in kitchen design, Matthew has worked around the world to provide his clients with original, memorable kitchens and baths. Function is amply addressed, but so are aesthetics and comfort.  I think it is safe to say that we all left there with a new wave of inspiration!

Here are some of the biggest take away’s we gathered from his presentation:

1. When you are design a kitchen or bath, it is best to start with the product that has the least selections and work your way up.  Matthew prefers to start with the floor – the foundation of the room.  Then select countertops, backsplash, and lastly cabinets.  Cabinets have the most options.

2. Most kitchens need a strong focal point.  During the day, it can be the view outside but many impressive views become big dark walls at night.  A hood quickly can become a dramatic focal point, almost like the front door of a kitchen.  It should make a statement about the personality of the room.  A wood hood that matches the cabinetry can make a quite and elegant statement where a stainless hood establishes a utilitarian style.

3.  Matthew refereed to the hardware as the jewelry of the kitchen.  If you would consider wearing it around your neck, wrist, ears, etc, then you have selected the right piece.

4.  Ceilings can unfortunately be the most ignored part of a room.  Inexpensive moldings, beams, wood planking, or tile pattern can complete the look of the room.

5.  Matthew compares the design of a  kitchen to a three lane road.  On the left is traditional elements and on the right is contemporary elements.  To achieve the eclectic, transitional look that Matthew aims for, he has his clients try and still in the middle of these two roads.  A selection of a traditional elements requires a selection of a contemporary element to keep the room balanced.
